PREVENT-iT (Pilot)

PREVENT-iT

Complications following TJR include persistent wound drainage (PWD) and periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), both of which often necessitate additional surgery. Given the high volume of hip and knee arthroplasty procedures, it is imperative to investigate frugal interventions with strong biologic rationale to target wound complication and PJI prevention. Recent evidence suggests that irrigation fluids and topical antibiotics may reduce the risk of PJI following TJR. The primary objective of PREVENT-iT is to determine the feasibility of a definitive trial that compares irrigation fluids and topical antimicrobials to reduce the risk of wound complications requiring reoperation in patients undergoing primary or aseptic revision hip or knee TJR.  This is a multi-site trial of 500 patients assessed at 6 weeks, 6 months and 1 year post surgery.
